pitorro

pitorro , a member of the rum family, is the Puerto Rican version of moonshine, distilled for the most part illicitly in the countryside from sugar or molasses and typically bottled unaged at over 50 percent ABV, and sometimes as high as 80 percent. See moonshine. There are, however, a handful of legal brands from licensed distilleries, including one in New York City, Port Morris Distillery in the Bronx. Pitorro is popular as a base for Coquito, a Puerto Rican Christmas drink made with coconut milk, eggs, and spices. It is also infused with seasonal fruits to create a liqueur-like drink.
