The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails

Faith, Nicholas

Faith, Nicholas (1933–2018), was an award-winning British journalist and author who wrote over twenty-five books on a wide range of subjects, from railroads to Bordeaux. However, he is best known for his writing on cognac and other spirits, drawing from experience gained during an extensive career covering business at some of the top papers and magazines in England such as the Economist, London’s Sunday Times, and Financial Times. He is the author of the 1986 Cognac: The Story of the World’s Greatest Brandy, Nicholas Faith’s Guide to Cognac, and the definitive 2004 Cognac, and was considered one of the world’s top experts on cognac. He was also a founder of the International Spirits Challenge and was the first recipient of the Bureau National Interprofessional de Cognac’s (BNIC) Lifetime Achievement Award. Nicholas Faith championed cognac as a world-class spirit and a base spirit in cocktails, arguing that both British and American traditions are more likely to dictate mixing cognac in a highball with soda.
