glycerin

glycerin , also known as glycerol (C3H8O3), is a nontoxic sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in food and is soluble in both alcohol and water. It is an excellent solvent and is often used to increase the solubility of organic compounds in water for products with low alcohol content. It can also be added to spirits to increase viscosity, body, or mouthfeel and add sweetness. Glycerin has been used to smooth out the harsh characteristics of poorly distilled spirits and mask flaws in those products (it is commonly found in cheap vodkas). See texture and mouthfeel.
