The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails

The American Distilling Institute

The American Distilling Institute is a trade organization founded by Bill Owens (1938–), an influential American photographer and journalist, in 2003 to promote the interests of American distillers, particularly those on the smaller, “craft” end of the spectrum. Through its membership forums, online resources, newsletter, Distiller magazine, annual conference, distilling workshops, and other events, ADI provides distillers with technical and regulatory guidance, as well as information on potentially relevant legislation. The organization also organizes an annual judging of craft spirits by panels of industry experts. Awards are given for both spirits and packaging.

The definition of craft distilling is nebulous, but the ADI has addressed the issue with a craft spirit certification program. To receive certification, distillers and blenders must be independently owned, operate at a small scale in both sales and total production, and employ hands-on production techniques. Certified producers are permitted to advertise their status on their product labels.
