pour spout , or “speed pourer,” is commonly employed in bars to facilitate the pouring of frequently used spirits and other drink ingredients. Fitted snugly into the neck of a bottle, a pour spout allows for a steady, predictable flow of liquid when the bottle is upended, which is particularly helpful when free pouring. See free pouring. Typical pour spouts are made of stainless steel with a rubber seal (originally, in the late nineteenth century, the seal was cork) or, alternatively, entirely of plastic. Some come equipped with a flap or a screen to keep out insects and debris. A specialized type of spout known as a ball pourer utilizes a floating ball bearing to automatically cut off the flow of liquid after a desired amount has been poured.
